This map comes from first edition of the 'Atlas Universel...', by
Edme Mentelle and Pierre Grégoire Chanlaire
published in Paris during the French Revolution in
1797 (An six de la République; according to the French Revolutionary calendar).
Plate No. 41.
Edme Mentelle (1730-1815) was a
historian, geographer, and editor, active in Paris, Cour du Louvre, 7.
He was a head of the French Academy's section of Geography.
Mentelle was well known in his own time as a Voltairean historian who
wrote treatises promoting the Enlightenment for young readers.
Known for his manipulation of both politics and science,
Mentelle was in turn an enthusiastic supporter of the Republic, of
Napoleon, and of Louis XVIII, from whom he received the Cross of the
Legion of Honour.
Pierre Grégoire Chanlaire (1758-1817)
was a cartographer and editor,
active in Paris, rue Geoffroy-Langevin 328.
The map was engraved by
Pierre François Tardieu (1752-1798),
a member of a French family of notable engravers. Designed by L. Aubert.

This authentic detailed map of Marche shows towns, villages,
roads, rivers, and forests. The County of La Marche was a French province before the
Revolution of 1789 corresponding roughly to the modern departement of
Creuse, with a small fragment of Indre and much of northern
Haute-Vienne.
In ancient times the country was part of Limousin, from which it was
detached in the middle of the 10th century to form a separate frontier
countship (march) to protect Poitou and the rest of the duchy of
Aquitaine against invasion from the north.
Administratively, basse Marche was from 1586 under the intendant of
Limoges, and haute Marche was under the intendant of Moulins
(Bourbonnais); judicially, the whole province depended on the Parlement
of Paris.
Important cities/towns shown on the map are Aubusson,
Chénérailles, Guéret, Bellac, Limoges,
Souterraine, and Le Dorat.
The map is a magnificent document and a treat for history buffs.
