This map comes from first edition of the 'Atlas Universel...', by
Edme Mentelle and Pierre Grégoire Chanlaire
published in Paris during the French Revolution in
1797 (An six de la République; according to the French Revolutionary calendar).
Plate No. 43.
Edme Mentelle (1730-1815) was a
historian, geographer, and editor, active in Paris, Cour du Louvre, 7.
He was a head of the French Academy's section of Geography.
Mentelle was well known in his own time as a Voltairean historian who
wrote treatises promoting the Enlightenment for young readers.
Known for his manipulation of both politics and science,
Mentelle was in turn an enthusiastic supporter of the Republic, of
Napoleon, and of Louis XVIII, from whom he received the Cross of the
Legion of Honour.
Pierre Grégoire Chanlaire (1758-1817)
was a cartographer and editor,
active in Paris, rue Geoffroy-Langevin 328.
The map was engraved by
Pierre François Tardieu (1752-1798),
a member of a French family of notable engravers. Designed by Herault.

This authentic detailed map of Limousine shows towns, villages,
roads, rivers, and forests.
Limousin is a region of France encompassing the central departements of
Corrèze, Haute-Vienne, and Creuse. Limousin is bounded by Centre to the
north, Auvergne to the east, Midi-Pyrénées to the south, Aquitaine to
the southwest, and Poitou-Charentes to the west. The capital is Limoges.
Limousin was ceded to the English by the Treaty of Calais (1360) and
reconquered by the French king Charles V from 1370 to 1374. After
further disruptions during the war, Limousin remained under the
suzerainty of the French kings. Royal control became direct when the
viscounty of Limoges was added to the domain (1607) and when Turenne was
purchased in 1738.
The gouvernement of Limousin, organized in the 17th century, was much
reduced in size from the original province, including only the territory
of the four medieval viscounties.
Important cities/towns shown on the map are
Limoges, Tulle, Uzerche, Pierre-Buffière, Lubersac, Arnac-Pompadour,
Treignac, Brive-la-Gaillarde, and Argentat.
The Limousin language is a dialect of Occitan language.
The limousine car is named after the region because the inhabitants wore
a hood with a profile perceived to be similar to that of the car.
The map is a magnificent document and a treat for history buffs.
