Superb Engraving
This antique engraving comes from the sixth of the plate volumes
("Recueil de Planches") issued as a supplement to the
"Encyclopédie, ou Dictionaire Raisonne Des Sciences" of Denis Diderot and Jean
Lerond d'Alembert. The Encyclopédie
was published between 1751 and 1780 and was to become a monument
in the history of European thought and a permanent source for all
aspects of eighteenth-century civilization. The volume was published in Paris
in 1768 by André-François
Le Breton, Claude Briasson, and Michel-Antoine David.
The plate (Mineralogie, 6-me Collection, Plate No. VIII) was designed by
Jean-Jacques de Boissieu and
engraved by Robert Benard.

This authentic fascinating engraving
illustrates section on Earth Science (geology, mineralogy) of
"Encyclopédie."
It depicts the rock of Pereneire near St Sandoux in Auvergne.
Nicolas Desmarest (1725-1815) was the first person to connect basalt and
volcanoes. He visited the Auvergne region in 1763,
explored basaltic prisms in Saint Sandoux, and noted their volcanic origin.
This discovery resulted in his election to the Academy of Sciences in 1771.
In 1768 he wrote a caption
for this plate in the Encyclopedie.
This antique print is a magnificent document and a treat for buffs
of natural history. See pictures

Jean-Jacques de Boissieu (1736-1810) was a
French artist.
He studied at the Ecole Gratuite de Dessin in his home town of
Lyon, but was mostly self-taught. He began making prints in the period
1758-1764, then went to Italy with Louis-Alexandre, Duc de la
Rochefoucauld (he met Voltaire on his way), returning with a
collection of landscape drawings.
He continued to produce prints in Lyon, which earned him a reputation as
the last representative of the older etching tradition. Boissieu made
many etchings of the Roman and Dutch countryside, as well as the
countryside around Lyon.
The plate size is 8.8 x 13.9 inches printed on 10.4 x
16.5 inches sheet of laid paper. Wide margins suitable for framing.
Uncolored, as originally issued.
Clear plate mark.
The condition is
very good. Imperfections: age toning;
browning in margins, outside the plate area.
Will look great with a mat and frame.
