Superb Engraving
This antique engraving comes from the sixth of the plate volumes
("Recueil de Planches") issued as a supplement to the
"Encyclopédie, ou Dictionaire Raisonne Des Sciences" of Denis Diderot and Jean
Lerond d'Alembert. The Encyclopédie
was published between 1751 and 1780 and was to become a monument
in the history of European thought and a permanent source for all
aspects of eighteenth-century civilization. The volume was published in Paris
in 1768 by André-François
Le Breton, Claude Briasson, and Michel-Antoine David.
The plate (No. XVIII) was designed by François Nicolas Martinet and
engraved by Benard.

This authentic fascinating engraving depicts
Ruffed Lemur, Mongoose Lemur, and a Monkey of Ceylon (Sri Lanka).
This antique print is a magnificent document and a treat for buffs
of natural history. See pictures
for more details; click image to view larger version.
The Mongoose Lemur is a lemur ranging from 12 to 18
inches long plus a tail of 16 to 25 inches. The Mongoose Lemur lives in
Madagascar and the islands of Comoros. The Mongoose Lemur mostly eats fruit,
though flowers, leaves and nectar also make up part of its diet. It is
unusual in that depending on the season it is either diurnal or
nocturnal.
The Ruffed Lemur (maki) is recognizable by its fur pattern that is
mostly dark red and black with some white.
The fur arranges in a large tuft on the sides of the face and behind the
ears in a ruffed manner. The facial hair is normally black and short and
the animal possesses a pronounced muzzle. Their size reaches 60 cm, plus
a long tail of about the same length, and their weight varies from 6 to
10 kg. They have long and lanky arms and legs which they use to
brachiate among the branches.
The plate size is 8.9 x 14 inches printed on 10.4 x
16.5 inches sheet of watermarked laid paper. Wide margins suitable for framing.
Uncolored, as originally issued.
Clear plate mark.
The condition is
good. Imperfections: age toning; one faint diagonal fold.
Will look great with a mat and frame.
