Double Page Folio Map. Outline Hand Color. Four Informative Pages in French

This map comes from the Atlas Universel de Géographie Ancienne et Moderne... by Colonel Pierre Lapie (1779-1850) and his son Alexandre Emile Lapie (1809-1850) who worked on maps with his father, and was a Captain in the same Guards Division as his father. From around 1820 Pierre Lapie was First Geographer to the King of France, Chief of the Topographic Section of the War Office, military cartographer, and publisher. In 1829, with Alexandre Emile, Pierre issued Atlas Universel... , which was reissued in 1837, 1841, and later. The map was engraved in 1838 by Pierre Tardieu, a foremost French 19th century engraver. Plate No. 32. Upper left: Atlas Universel. Lower left: Grave par Pierre Tardieu. Lower right: Imp: chez Kaeppelin et Cie à Paris.

This authentic double-page folio map of Greece and the Aegean Sea shows detail of the interior and coastal line, including states, provinces, cities, towns, roads, rivers, and mountans. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridian: Paris. The map depicts:
  • The Kingdom of Greece. Greece gained formal recognition in the treaty of 1832 between Bavaria and the Great, or "Protecting," Powers. Significantly, the Greeks themselves were not party to the treaty. Greece now, formally at least, became a sovereign state, and the Greeks were thus the first of the subject peoples of the Ottoman Empire to gain full independence. But the state contained within its borders scarcely one-third of the Greek populations of the Middle East, and the struggle to expand the nation's borders was to dominate the first century of independent statehood.
  • The Ionian Republic ("Iles Ioniennes") - the island group off the west coast of Greece, stretching south from the Albanian coast to the southern tip of the Peloponnese, and often called Heptanesos ("Seven Islands"). The islands are Corfu, Cephalonia, Zacynthus (Zante), Leucas (Ste. Maure), Ithaca, Cythera, and Paxos, with their minor dependencies. The islands were placed by the Treaty of Paris (1815) under the exclusive protection of Great Britain. An Ionian senate and legislative assembly began to function in 1818, but real authority was vested in a British high commissioner. In 1864 Britain ceded the islands to Greece.
  • Turkish Empire was created in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries on the ruins of the Byzantine Empire, from the caliphate of Baghdad and independent Turkish principalities. It occupied a vast territory extending over parts of Asia, Africa, and Europe between the Eastern Mediterranean, the Black Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the Red Sea. The map shows northern Greece (including Macedonia) and Crete (Ile de Candie) as part of the Ottoman Empire, as well as the Dodecanese Islands (including Rhodes, Cos), Lesbos, and Chios
  • Rumelia (incl. Constantinople) and the Sea of Marmara
Four large bonus pages (69-72) from the atlas are included. They contain interesting information (in French) on:
  1. Royaume de Grèce (p. 69)
  2. Republiqie de Iles Ioniennes (p. 70, top). The Ionians are said to be under British protectorate (... sous le protection de l'Angleterre).
  3. Divisions of Asia (Table, p. 70, bottom)
  4. General description of Asia (p. 71-72), including Greek provinces of Asia Minor.
There are most interesting data on geography, history, annual revenue, army, and population. The map is a magnificent document and a treat for history buffs. See pictures for more details; click image to view larger version.

The map is 15.7 x 21.6 inches printed on 19.9 x 26.3 inches sheet of strong paper. One centerfold, as issued. Hand colored outline. The condition is good. Imperfections: faint water stains, mainly in margins. The additional pages have dimensions 13.3 x 19.8 inches. Will look great with a mat and frame.
