Double Page Folio Map. Outline Hand Color.
This map comes from the Atlas Universel de Géographie Ancienne et
Moderne...
by Colonel Pierre Lapie (1779-1850) and his son Alexandre Emile Lapie
(1809-1850)
who worked on maps with his father, and was a Captain in the same Guards
Division as his father.
From around 1820 Pierre Lapie was First Geographer to the King of
France, Chief of the Topographic Section of the War Office, military
cartographer, and publisher. In 1829, with Alexandre Emile, Pierre
issued Atlas Universel... , which was
reissued in 1837, 1841, and later.
The map was engraved by Pierre Tardieu, a foremost French 19th century engraver.
Plate No. 50.
Upper left: Atlas Universel.
Lower left: Gravée par Pierre Tardieu.
Lower right:
Imprimé par Kaeppelin et Cie.
This authentic double-page folio
map of southern part of South America
shows detail of the interior and coastal line, including states,
provinces, cities, towns, roads,
rivers, and mountans. Relief shown by hachures. Prime meridian: Paris.
The map is fairly detailed and contains many interesting
facts and oddities.
-
Central and north Argentina are shown as
"La Plata" (United Provinces of the Rio
de la Plata).
-
Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego
are shown as a separate entity. It is only
in 1881 that Argentina and Chile (called Chili on the map)
agreed to delimit
their Andean frontier, including partitioning Tierra del Fuego.
-
The native Indians of Patagonia are marked: Yacana, Dilmahets,
Reyuhues, Schoau, Tchuelchus, Toelchus, Puelches, Moluches, Tarniches, etc.
-
Borders of Paraguay, Brazil, Bolivia, and Chile
are very different from the present ones.
In 1842, the border between Chile and Bolivia was delineated along
Rio Frio (around Punta San Pedro)
-
Southern Rio Grande do Sul is shown as part of
Uruguay (Banda Orientale).
Uruguay
is called "Monte Video ou Cisplatine" (Cisplatina).
-
In January
1833 Britain reasserted an earlier claim to the Falkland Islands, and a
British warship took possession of the islands. The map shows the islands
as "Iles Malouines ou Falkland."
-
The map shows nonexistent Aurora Islands
(Iles Aurore),
southwestward of the Falklands, between there and South Georgia.
Their took their name from the Spanish ship Aurora that first reported them in
1762, an nobody has had
a sight of them since 1856. The Auroras stayed on the maps until the 1870s. For an
excellent story about
these islands, read "No Longer on the Map" by Raymond Ramsay (Ballantine Books 1972),
pages 78-80.
-
The map shows Shag Rocks Islands,
six small islands in the westernmost extreme of South Georgia.
They were known to sealers prior to 1823. They were later rediscovered by
James Sheffield and given their current name, probably because shags and
other seabirds frequent them.
For an
excellent story about
these islands, read "No Longer on the Map" by Raymond Ramsay (Ballantine Books 1972),
page 79.
-
The South Orkney Islands, a group of islands in the Southern Ocean, are depicted
("Iles Orcades ou Powell").
They were discovered in 1821 by two sealers, Nathaniel Brown Palmer and
George Powell. The Islands were originally named Powell's Group, with
the main island named Coronation island as it was the year of the
coronation of King George IV. In 1823, James Weddell visited the
Islands, gave the archipelago its present name (after the Orkney
Islands, Scotland) and also renamed some of the islands.
-
The South Shetland Islands are marked. This is a group of Antarctic
islands, lying about 120 kilometres north of the Antarctic Peninsula.
Elephant Island is also called Barrow
-
Tip of Antarctica shown as "Terre de la Trinite".
The map is a magnificent document and a treat for history buffs.
