Superb Engraving
This antique engraving comes from the sixth of the plate volumes
("Recueil de Planches") issued as a supplement to the
"Encyclopédie, ou Dictionaire Raisonne Des Sciences" of Denis Diderot and Jean
Lerond d'Alembert. The Encyclopédie
was published between 1751 and 1780 and was to become a monument
in the history of European thought and a permanent source for all
aspects of eighteenth-century civilization. The volume was published in Paris
in 1768 by André-François
Le Breton, Claude Briasson, and Michel-Antoine David.
The plate (No. LII) was designed by François Nicolas Martinet and
engraved by Robert Benard.

This authentic fascinating engraving depicts angel shark,
thornback ray, and
marbled electric ray.
This antique print is a magnificent document and a treat for buffs
of natural history. See pictures

The angel sharks are an unusual genus of sharks with flattened bodies
and broad pectoral fins that give them a strong resemblance to skates
and rays. They occur
worldwide in temperate and tropical seas.
While the forward part of the angel shark's body is broad and flattened,
the rear part retains a muscular appearance more typical of other
sharks. The eyes and spiracles are on top, and the five gill slits are
on bottom.
The thornback ray (Raja clavata) is probably one of the commonest rays encountered by
divers. Like all rays it has a flattened body with broad, wing-like
pectoral fins. The body is kite-shaped with a long, thorny tail. The
back is covered in numerous thorny spines.
The gulf torpedo or marbled electric ray (Torpedo sinuspersici) is a
species of fish in the Torpedinidae family. It is found in Bahrain,
Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, India, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Madagascar,
Mozambique, Oman, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Sudan, United Arab
Emirates, Yemen, and possibly Somalia. Its natural habitats are open
seas and coral reefs.
The plate size is 8.9 x 14 inches printed on 10.4 x
16.5 inches sheet of laid paper. Wide margins suitable for framing.
Uncolored, as originally issued.
Clear plate mark.
The condition is
very good.
Will look great with a mat and frame.
