This map comes from the Atlas Universel de Géographie Ancienne et
Moderne...
by Colonel Pierre Lapie (1779-1850) and his son Alexandre Emile Lapie
(1809-1850)
who worked on maps with his father, and was a Captain in the same Guards
Division as his father.
From around 1820 Pierre Lapie was First Geographer to the King of
France, Chief of the Topographic Section of the War Office, military
cartographer, and publisher. In 1829, with Alexandre Emile, Pierre
issued Atlas Universel... , which was
reissued in 1837, 1841, and later.
The map was engraved by Pierre Tardieu, a foremost French 19th century engraver.
Plate No. 40.
Upper left: Atlas Universel.
Lower left: Gravée par Pierre Tardieu.

of northeastern Africa and the Arabian coast of the Red Sea

The map is a magnificent document and a treat for history buffs.

The map shows Egypt and Sinai, Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, N. Somalia,
and Saudi Arabia. A number of kingdoms in southern Sudan and Ethiopia are marked:
Kordofan, Darfur, Bedja, Mara, Galla.
The area around Mecca is called Beled el Haram.
The Haj routes to Mecca are shown. Caravan routes across Saudi Arabia
are marked.
The Beja (Bedja) are nomadic tribes that live mainly in the Red Sea Hills of the
Sudan. This mountainous, semi-desert region lies parallel to the Red Sea
coast from southeastern Egypt through northeastern Sudan into Eritrea.
The Beja roam these mountains between the Red Sea and the Nile and
Atbara rivers and also the plains that slope down westwards to the Nile
river valley. They are a non-Arab, Hamitic people, numbering 1.8
million, who call themselves Bedawiyet and speak a Cushitic language
called To-Bedawiye. Most Beja speak some Arabic as a second language,
and in the south some of them speak Tigre.
The White Nile is shown to have its source in the Djebel al Kamar
Mountains or the Mountains of the Moon ("Montages de la Lune"). In the
2nd Century, C.E. Greek geographer Ptolemy wrote of the existence of
snow capped mountains near the Equator in Africa. Ptolemy was not
completely wrong. Although the Nile has it source in Lake Victoria, the
snows of the Ruwenzori Range (extending south-north for 80 miles
between Lake Edward and Lake Albert) feed the sources of the Nile. The
Ruwenzori was discovered fairly late, in 1888, by Stanley.
The map is 15.6 x 21.4 inches
printed on 19.8 x 26.3 inches sheet of strong paper. One
centerfold, as issued. Hand colored outline.
Wide margins suitable for framing.
The condition is
good/very good. Imperfections:
faint water stains.
Will look great with a mat and
frame.
