Superb Engraving
This antique engraving comes from the sixth of the plate volumes
("Recueil de Planches") issued as a supplement to the
"Encyclopédie, ou Dictionaire Raisonne Des Sciences" of Denis Diderot and Jean
Lerond d'Alembert. The Encyclopédie
was published between 1751 and 1780 and was to become a monument
in the history of European thought and a permanent source for all
aspects of eighteenth-century civilization. The volume was published in Paris
in 1768 by André-François
Le Breton, Claude Briasson, and Michel-Antoine David.
The plate (No. XII) was designed by François Nicolas Martinet and
engraved by Benard.

This authentic fascinating engraving depicts three Viverrids:
African Civet, Large Indian Civet, and Genet.
Civets are small, lithe-bodied, mostly arboreal mammals native to the
tropics of Africa and Asia.
Genets are Old World carnivores of the family Viverridae, related to
civets and linsangs.
This antique print is a magnificent document and a treat for buffs

The Large Indian Civet (Viverra zibetha) is generally a grizzled greyish
brown, with white and black bars along their neck (usually two white
stripes and three black stripes), stripes on the tail, and a white
muzzle. The hair on their back is longer. Their claws are retractable.
They have hair in between their paw pads. The Indian civet ranges from
Indochina to China. It can be found in the countries of Nepal,
Bangladesh, the Malay peninsula, and Vietnam.
Genets are superficially cat-like creatures, despite being only
distantly related to cats. Most of them have spotted coats and long,
banded tails, small heads, and large ears. Like civets, genets have
strong musk glands, which are used to mark territory, and they are known
to perform handstands when doing this. Genets are highly agile
creatures, and are the only Viverrids that stand bipedally.
The plate size is 8.9 x 14 inches printed on 10.5 x
16.5 inches sheet of watermarked laid paper. Wide margins suitable for framing.
Uncolored, as originally issued.
Clear plate mark.
The condition is
very good. Imperfections: age toning; small marginal fold, outside the plate area.
Will look great with a mat and frame.
