Powles Hook (Paulus Hook) is a community on the Hudson River waterfront
in Jersey City, New Jersey, located one mile across the river from
Manhattan. The name Hook comes from the Dutch word "hoeck" which
translates into "point of land." This "point of land" has been described
as an elevated area, the location of which is today bounded by
Montgomery, Hudson, Essex and Warren Streets.
The King's Bridge was erected in 1693 by Frederick Philipse a local Lord
loyal to the British Monarch. The bridge spanned the now-filled-in
Spuyten Duyvil Creek, roughly south-parallel with today's 230th Street.
The Kingsbridge carried Boston Post Road, connecting continental America
(today's Bronx) with Marble Hill, once part of the Manhattan island, but
still today part of the Manhattan borough. The bridge is said to still
be in place, having been buried when the creekbed was filled in. The
creek water flow was redirected to the new and deeper shipping canal,
south of Marble Hill.
Dimensions of the engraved area plus caption is 3.9 x 6.6 inches.
Printed on a 5.2 x 7.9
inches sheet.
The condition is fair/good. Imperfections:
age toning, faint water stain, weakened impression.
Will look great with a mat and frame.
