The confectionery business of Gerardus Johannes Droste was opened in Haarlem in the summer of 1863. Customers could buy a cup of waterchocolate and various types of candy, for example chocolate pastilles, officially called 'Pastilles Droste'.
Droste established a grand reputation in these early years and as a result, the first Droste factory of the firm G.J. Droste opened its doors on August 2nd 1890.
Since 1891 Droste had been able to allocate the complete chocolate process in-house. The cocoa beans were stored in the loft, while sales took place in the retail store. This continued until 1946. Because of a lack of room, the factory was relocated to the Noorder Buiten Spaarne in 1891. It was in this plant were the production of cocoa and chocolate started. This waterside location was very favourable for Droste, enabling the delivery of raw materials and the transport of finished products by boat.

CALCULATED SHIPPING~ (by weight) ~ Actual shipping costs will be calculated during checkout based on the shipping carrier rates, package weight and your location (zip code).
USPS PRIORITY MAIL FLAT RATE SHIPPING~ For customers who would like to take advantage of USPS Priority Mail Flat rate shipping, here are a few helpful tips: There is no way to automatically calculate flat-rate shipping for combined orders. Consequently each order has to be evaluated individually by us and the flat-rate shipping cost adjustment has to be done, by hand, AFTER the order is placed.
If you are uncertain about what will fit into a flat-rate box, simply put the items you want into our store shopping cart and email the contents to us before placing the order. We will get back to you with our recommendations about what will fit.
When you place the order, as you proceed through our checkout, request flat-rate shipping in the MESSAGE field. We will then adjust for flat-rate shipping and send you an invoice/payment link for the adjusted amount.
If the flat-rate shipping appears as one of the shipping options for one of our item listings, this means that the listing is designed to be shipped in (fill up) a USPS priority flat-rate box. This usually applies to case units (dry items) or 5-7lb units (cold items).
Flat rate shipping disclaimer~ we try to ship items that we think will survive fairly well shipped this way but some cosmetic damage may occur during shipment. We do not guarantee flat rate shipments for cosmetic damage.
Shipping for heat sensitive (cheese, chocolate, meats & seafood) items~ We only warranty items for heat damage that are shipped within the continental U.S. via USPS Priority mail (including flat rate boxes) with our special foam coolers (order separately) or UPS if you are within a 2 day transit range.
We do not recommend (or warranty) ever shipping delicate cold items via UPS ground to any destinations outside a 2 day (transit time), even in the winter. These items have a limited life and the transit time to the EAST COAST is a full 7 days. In most cases USPS priority mail (2 day air) is only slightly more expensive and the flat-rate boxes are often less expensive.
If you are within a 2 day transit time of us (CA, OR, WA, ID, NV, UT & AZ.) you can safely use UPS Ground shipping all year round for cold items.
We do not warranty any shipments to destinations outside the continental U.S. against heat damage, so we recommend that you only order cold items during your cold season if you live outside the continental U.S.
~Up to 12 Lbs of cold product will fit into the medium flat-rate box.
~Up to 5 Lbs of cold product will fit into the small foam cooler that fits inside the medium flat-rate box.
~Up to 18 Lbs of cold product will fit into the large flat-rate box.
~Up to 7 Lbs of cold product will fit into the large foam cooler that fits inside the large flat-rate box. **for foam coolers, this includes blue ice.
If you are in an area that is experiencing temps at or above 90 degrees we can only warranty your shipment if we are able to include an extra 1Lb blue ice in the foam cooler with the product. This means that less product can be included in your order (4 Lbs instead of 5 in the small cooler/regular flat-rate box and 6 Lbs instead of 7 in the large foam cooler). You save on shipping costs when you combine several items into a larger order. UPS ground and USPS priority mail charge $7.00-$10.00 for the first pound shipped, but only about .50 cents for any additional pounds. Also, the more items/Lbs of product you can fit into a flat-rate box, the lower the shipping cost will be per item or pound.
