1930 Chicago Surface Lines Western Ave Streetcar Photo
This is an original 1930s photograph looking south on the 4700 block of Western Avenue in Chicago, just south of Lawrence. On the right, just above the streetcar is the top of the Three Links Hotel sign at 4740 N. Western. (The building is still there and now known as the Three Links Lodges and Halls.) The streetcar is car #1015 which, according to a rail site, was built by Pullman in 1910/1911 for Chicago Railways. The sign in the streetcar window Has Western Howard on it. (I'm not sure what the 316 number halfway down the front of the car is for, schedule #?.) This photo is stamped on the back with the Aragon Studio, 4710 N. Western Ave, Chicago, ink stamp. The photo is not dated, but the cars look around 1930, plus or minus a few years. It may be during the winter because the truck in the left foreground has chains on the tires. On the left side of the street (east side) you see a restaurant marquee, a barber shup pole on the sidewalk, part of a bakery sign, a Silent automatic oil burners sign, a sign company, and way in the background the Lincoln Square Rapid Transit Lines overpass. The photo measures 8" x 10". The person I purchased these from said they were from the estate of a man who worked for a traffic signal company. Most of the photos show traffic signals, lights, etc. In this photo you can see tracks next to a cement island with lights, so maybe it was a streetcar stop? Check google earth and you can see some of the same buildings there today. The photo is in good condition - there are a few minor creases - there are a few light marks - there is a small mark in the margin on the right edge. A NICE PIECE OF CHICAGO STREET CAR HISTORY! Postage is $4.50 . Check out my other listings for a few more of these Chicago north side traffic control photos showing the same streetcar stop. Combine purchases to save on postage.
