1993 Taverns Fight Church Move to Calumet City IL Orig Editorial Cartoon Art
This is the original artwork by Jack Higgins for his Chicago Sun-Times editorial cartoon dated 1993. The art appears to deal with an African American church that news reports from 1993 reported tried to get a zoning variation from Calumet City, Illinois to allow them to open in a commercial zone. Taverns on the same block and within a couple blocks of the proposed church complained that a church would hurt business. News reports said the zoning board approved the special use permit, but the last news report I found online from September of 1993 said the Calumet City council had decided to deny the permit. I checked online and it appears the church ended up moving to a nearby suburb, South Holland, IL. The artwork measures approx. 11-1/4" x 14-3/4". This is the original artwork that Jack Higgins created. The artwork is in good condition - there are a few small marks/smudges/ light dirt on the art - you can see where the artist made some alterations as he crafted his work including along the lower left border - there is some light dirt / shading on the back along the left edge.
