1986 Muammar Gaddafi Libya Sabre Rattling Original Cartoon Jack Higgins Pirates
This is the original artwork by Jack Higgins for his Chicago Sun-Times editorial cartoon dated 1986. It is date stamped on the back Mar 27 '86 at 7:42pm so it was probably used the next day. The art may refer to the Gulf of Sidra clash that occurred between March 23-25, 1986. U.S. aircraft carriers moved near the area Muammar Gaddafi (also spelled Muammar Khadafy, hence the "K" on his hat in the cartoon) "line of death", which marked waters considered by Gaddafi to be Libyan territory. American aircraft crossed the "line of death" which the U.S. still considered to be within international waters. During this tense time Libya and U.S. planes were close and this led to conflict. When the dust settled a few Libyan boats and radar installations had been struck with approx 30 Libyan sailors killed. The U.S. suffered no losses. The artwork measures approx. 12-1/2" x 17-3/4". This is the original artwork that Jack Higgins created. You can see where the artist made corrections as he crafted the art. The artwork is in good condition - there are a few small marks/smudges/light dirt on the art - there is a phone number written on the top border - there are some layout editor notes written on the back - there is ink transfer on the back from artwork that was stored under this art - there is some light dirt on the back - there are two 2-1/2" x 1/2"
