1984 Whites Protest Family Moving Chicago Integration Orig Cartoon Civil Rights
This is the original artwork by Jack Higgins for his Chicago Sun-Times editorial cartoon dated 1984. The artwork refers to "The Island" which is a somewhat isolated (wedged between an expressway and an industrial area on 2 sides and Oak Park and Cicero on the other sides) part of the Austin neighborhood in Chicago. In 1984 the other parts of Austin were over two-thirds occupied by African Americans, while "The Island" was exclusively white. In November, when a black family moved into an apartment in "the Island" news reports said that white youths threw bottles through their windows for several hours overnight. The family had just moved in and didn't have a phone so they couldn't call the police. The family moved out. The artwork measures approx. 12-1/2" x 17-5/8". This is the original artwork that Jack Higgins created. On the back you can see some markings / notes made by Sun-Times layout editors. The artwork is in good condition - there are some small marks/smudges on the art - there is some light dirt - there is light dirt on the back of the art and ink transfer on the back from artwork that was stored under this one - on the back there is a 3-1/4" x 3/4" area at the bottom where there is a remnant of a sticker and cellophane tape. A NICE, ONE-OF-A-KIND PIECE OF EDITORIAL ARTWORK THAT WOULD LOOK GREAT FRAMED! When packed, this will ship at the 2 pound rate - check the postage calculator. Jack Higgins worked at the Chicago Sun-Times for over 35 years and won a Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning in 1989. Check out my other listings for more cartoons by Jack Higgins.
