1994 MLB Baseball Strike Mudville Casey at the Bat Orig Cartoon Art Jack Higgins
This is the original artwork by Jack Higgins for his Chicago Sun-Times editorial cartoon dated 1994. The artwork deals with the Major League Baseball strike that stopped the season in August of 1994. Based on the layout editor notes in the margin, I believe this was published on Thursday, September 15, 1994. The poem riffs on Thayer's "Casey at the Bat" with the poem changed to read "Oh somewhere in this world cheers a happy baseball fan beyond the far horizon in a place that is called Japan. But here our voices are still, we no longer cheer and shout. There is no joy in Mudville, the game of baseball has struck out." To me, the artwork looks like the Chicago Cubs Wrigley Field.
The artwork measures approx. 11-5/8" x 14-1/2". This is the original artwork that Jack Higgins created and you can see some corrections, adjustments he made as he crafted his work. The artwork is in good condition - there are a few small marks/smudges/ light dirt on the art - there are editor notes written along the left edge.
