John Glenn Astronaut Back to Space Orig Cartoon Art 1998 Jack Higgins Discovery
This is the original artwork by Jack Higgins for his Chicago Sun-Times editorial cartoon dated 1998. The artwork shows a father and son gazing up at the stars and when asked what he wants to be when he grows up, the son responds "John Glenn". This cartoon would have run in the Chicago Sun-Times around October 29, 1998 when at 77 years of age, John Glenn returned to space as a crew member on Space Shuttle Discovery. John Glenn was the first American to orbit the Earth and after the nine day mission in 1998 he became the oldest person to be on an orbital spaceflight. The artwork measures approx. 11-1/2" x 14-5/8". On the back there is the beginning of a preliminary drawing of this cartoon. This is the original artwork that Jack Higgins created. The artwork is in good condition - there are a few notes by the editor on the bottom margin - you can see some corrections that the artist made has he crafted the art.
